Cards during the wars

During the Winterwar and the Continuation war, postcards were important to keep contact between people. People moved to the country to escape the bombings and children were sent to Sweden for protection, soldiers at the front missed their families and during all of this the enemy worked ceaselessly to cut all lines of communication. Postcards quickly became a way to communicate when you did not have time to write an entire letter.

Themes on the cards during wartime varied greatly. The amount of patriotic art on cards was the largest since the years of oppression under Russia. Religious themes were also common.

In Lauri's collection we find several different types of cards from wartime. There are cards sent from soldiers at the front, Christmas cards and cards sent to find out how someone else is doing.
